Guatemala Referral Process - Frequently Asked Questions
1. When will we be eligible to receive a referral?
Only after you have completed the entire dossier along with the USCIS I-600A approval (171-H) can you then be eligible to receive a referral.
2. How long does it typically take to receive a referral once we have completed our dossier?
The answer to this question varies somewhat due to the demand for different genders. If you are open to either gender it will be quicker than if you are only requesting a girl. However, the average length of time from submission of dossier to referral is 4-8 weeks.
3. Will we get more than one referral at a time to consider?
No, in Guatemala you will receive only one referral at a time to consider.
4. What information do we get with each referral?
You will receive several still pictures via e-mail of the child. You will receive a medical certificate, the results of blood tests, a copy of the child's birth certificate and sometimes you will get a copy of the birth mother's cedula (internal Guatemalan passport).
5. How much time do we have to make a decision?
IAG will allow you as much time as you need to make a decision. If a reasonable time has transpired (ie; 3 weeks) and you are unable to make a decision, IAG may consider withdrawing the referral after a discussion with you takes place. However, it is in the child's best interests that a decision be made as soon as possible so that the process can proceed.
6. Can we have the referral information reviewed by a doctor?
Absolutely. In fact, IAG will supply you with a list of international adoption specialists throughout the country who specialize in the review of international referrals.
7. Can we refuse a referral?
Yes, you have the right to refuse a referral. You will be placed back on the waiting list and shown another child when one becomes available.
8. Once we accept a referral, can we change our mind?
You can certainly change your mind about a child at any point in the process as no one can force you to adopt a child with whom you are not comfortable. However, if your decision is based upon anything other than a serious medical concern, there is no guarantee that another referral will be given to you after that.
